Managing hamstring strain
Gallup is not participating in Commanders mandatory minicamp Wednesday due to a hamstring strain, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Gallup also sat out Tuesday's minicamp session due to his injury. After a one-season retirement hiatus, Gallup is competing to carve out a depth role in Washington's wide receiver corps and make a comeback in the NFL. His path to a spot on the 53-man roster will become increasingly difficult the more time he misses, but Gallup at least has over a month to get healthy ahead of training camp.

Gallup signed a one-year contract with the Raiders this offseason but then decided to retire in late July. He was never the same player after suffering an ACL tear in 2021, unable to regain the form that saw him top 1,000 yards in 2020.

Resuming career in Washington
Gallup, who agreed to a deal with the Commanders on Thursday, said last summer's abrupt retirement from the Raiders was prompted by his inability to adapt to new surroundings, Nick Shook of NFL.com reports. "I just think that the way that I was let go from being in some place for so long and then jumping right into another team and not being able to process 'cause I never went through that before," Gallup said at his introductory news conference.
ANALYSIS
Gallup had signed a one-year deal with the Raiders last offseason, but he explained Thursday that the change was "just fast" for him and he wasn't ready to process it. However, the veteran wideout kept himself in shape over the last several months and came to the conclusion he still wanted to play, and the Commanders, which have seen Olamide Zaccheaus and Dyami Brown depart this offseason, clearly saw him as a viable replacement.
