2025 Fantasy Outlook
Gross-Matos spent the first half of the 2024 season in and out of the trainer's room following a preseason knee injury. The 26-year-old had a standout performance against the Bears in Week 14 in which he sacked Caleb Williams thrice, but the rest of his outings were forgettable. Gross-Matos remains under contract for the 2025 campaign, but he needs to shine in the preseason in order to make the team after the 49ers added several talents at edge rusher this offseason. Hamstring
December 12, 2025
Gross-Matos (hamstring) is out for Sunday's game versus Tennessee, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Gross-Matos was just designated for return to practice from San Francisco's injured reserve list Thursday, but he'll have to spend at least one more game on the sideline as he nurses his hamstring injury. With Sam Okuayinonu (ankle) also out, Bryce Huff and 2023 second-rounder Keion White project as the 49ers' starters on the edge in Week 15.

A second-round pick of the Panthers in 2020, Gross-Matos finally became a regular starter last season. Suiting up for all 17 games, he posted a career-best 54 tackles to go with 2.5 sacks. He also recovered three fumbles. Ahead of the upcoming campaign, Gross-Matos faces a transition to outside linebacker in new coordinator Ejiro Evero's 3-4 scheme. Opposite standout Brian Burns, Gross-Matos will compete with Marquis Haynes for reps in what's slated to be the final year of his contract with Carolina.
A second-round pick in 2022, Gross-Matos boasts just six sacks through his first two seasons. Nonetheless, he could be asked to start opposite Brian Burns following the significant free-agent departure of Haason Reddick this offseason.
Gross-Matos ended last season with 24 tackles, 2.5 sacks and one forced fumble in 12 games. The 2020 second-round pick was slowed by an ankle injury early, but he managed five quarterback hits while starting Carolina's final seven games. Despite the offseason addition of fellow edge rusher Haason Reddick, Gross-Matos will look to build on his late-season momentum as he enters his second campaign.
Drafted 38th overall this year, Gross-Matos joins the Panthers after a highly productive last couple seasons at Penn State. In 24 games across his sophomore and junior campaigns, he managed 94 tackles, including 34.5 for loss, and 17 sacks. At 6-5, 266, he offers another towering presence opposite last year's first-rounder, Brian Burns. With plenty of snaps available given offseason departures, Gross-Matos seems like a strong candidate to make a significant impact as a rookie.

Shifting to new role
DECarolina Panthers
July 11, 2023
Gross-Matos is moving to outside linebacker to accommodate the Panthers' transition to a 3-4 base defense, Augusta Stone of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Gross-Matos took a significant step forward in both his workload and production in 2022, posting 54 tackles across 806 defensive snaps. The Panthers will likely be hoping to get more out him as a pass rusher, as he has yet to surpass 3.5 sacks in any of his three seasons in the NFL. Gross-Matos has been praised by Pro Bowl teammate Brian Burns this offseason, who noted that the Penn State product has done well digesting his new responsibilities in coverage.
