Returning to KC
Thornton (concussion) is set to re-sign with the Chiefs, NFL reporter Jordan Schultz reports. It's a two-year, $11 million deal, per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.
ANALYSIS
After spending his first three seasons with New England, Thornton joined Kansas City ahead of the 2025 campaign and ended up posting career-best marks of 438 yards and three touchdowns on 19 receptions. He also contributed 475 kick-return yards on 18 opportunities. The speedy wideout gives KC a legitimate downfield threat, as he averaged 23.1 yards per catch last year. Thornton ended the season on IR due to a concussion, but there's no indication that the head injury will carry into offseason activities. He'll likely retain a depth wideout role in 2026, though he could move up in the pecking order depending on how else the Chiefs address their wideout corps during the offseason, as both Hollywood Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster are unrestricted free agents.

Over the first two years of his pro career, Thornton, a 2022 second-rounder, has had trouble staying on the field and been limited to 35 catches in 22 contests. With an eye toward holding up better, the 6-2, 185-pounder sought to bulk up ahead of this season. Thornton's speed remains his calling card, and that's what could help him stick around if he has a strong summer under the tutelage of new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt. On the plus side, Thornton, 24, figures to have a clean slate with the team's new coaching staff, but the Baylor product has plenty of competition for targets in a crowded wideout corps that lacks a clear pecking order ahead of training camp.

Fellow speedster returns Sunday
Thornton, who's served as the Chiefs' most consistent downfield threat in the absence of Xavier Worthy over the last two-plus games, will see his teammate return to action in Sunday's Week 4 matchup against the Ravens, Nate Taylor of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Thornton has arguably shown nearly as much promise over his first three games in Kansas City than he did over his three seasons in New England combined after the Patriots selected him in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. The speedster has particularly thrived in the two full games Worthy has missed, posting a combined 7-130-2 line on 14 targets in that span. However, Worthy's return gives the Chiefs back their most potent deep threat, and it remains to be seen if Thornton will therefore see a reduction in downfield routes.
