Washington Nationals
2025 Fantasy Outlook
From an offensive perspective, Adams was one of the better-performing No. 2 catchers in baseball in 2023, putting up an .807 OPS across 158 plate appearances. That included a .960 OPS against left-handed pitching. However, Adams gave all that back in 2024, finishing with just a .629 OPS while spending some time in the minors. The Nationals brought Adams back to compete with Drew Millas for the backup job behind Keibert Ruiz. Adams' lack of minor-league options might give him an edge over Millas, but his poor defense works against him. Read Past Outlooks

Adams (groin) will start at catcher and bat third in Thursday's game versus the Marlins.
Analysis
Adams had to exit Tuesday's game after taking a foul tip to the groin area, but he checked out fine and is back in there after one day of rest. The 29-year-old has been operating as the Nationals' primary catcher since Keibert Ruiz (concussion) was sidelined and is slashing .239/.316/.380 with five home runs over 43 contests during that time.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
2022
Adams was one of the most productive backup catchers in baseball last season, slashing an impressive .273/.331/.476 with four home runs across 158 plate appearances. A huge chunk of that production came against left-handed pitching, with Adams sporting a .960 OPS with three of his four long balls versus southpaws. Adams made more than twice as many starts against lefties than he did against righties and it could be a similar setup in 2024, with Keibert Ruiz seeing some action at designated hitter those days. It's a role that could make him valuable again to the Nationals but one which probably won't lead to usefulness in fantasy leagues.
A third-round pick by Toronto in 2017, Adams was flipped to Washington in 2021 in exchange for lefty reliever Brad Hand. While Adams made the Opening Day roster for the Nationals, he was sent down for close to two months in the middle of the season and ended up totaling 155 plate appearances as getting Keibert Ruiz playing time was understandably the higher priority for the organization. Adams strikes out too much, but he can light up the radar gun with impressive exit velocity when he runs into one. He projects to open the year as the clear-cut No. 2 behind Ruiz.
Acquired from the Blue Jays in a trade for Brad Hand, Adams went from a system in which he was buried behind multiple better catching prospects to one in which Keibert Ruiz is set to be the starter for most of the decade. Adams projects to have decent power, slugging seven homers in only 36 games last year at Triple-A, but his hit tool is questionable and his defensive reputation isn't great, profiling him as a backup at the big-league level. He'll fill that role for the Nationals behind Ruiz in 2022.

Gets vote of confidence
CWashington Nationals
June 17, 2025
Manager Dave Martinez gave Adams a vote of confidence Tuesday and reaffirmed his position as Washington's backup catcher, reports Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com.
Analysis
The 28-year-old has a .091/.107/.218 slash line in 19 games this season and is in the midst of an 0-for-30 slump, but the Nationals aren't quite ready to test their other options behind Keibert Ruiz at catcher. Even with this season's ugly numbers, Adams has a .664 OPS in 187 regular-season games since being acquired by Washington in 2021, which are decent numbers for a No. 2 catcher.
