2025 Fantasy Outlook
Martinez has become a highly coveted pitcher in Major League Baseball in the years since he returned from his stint in Japan, so much so that the Reds extended the $21 million qualifying offer to keep him for 2025. The right-hander accepted and will return to Cincinnati after setting career highs in wins (10) and innings (142.1) last season. More of a swingman early in the campaign, Martinez moved to the rotation for good in early August and was brilliant down the stretch with a 0.83 ERA over 32.2 innings in September. What Martinez lacks in terms of fastball velocity, he makes for in quality and variety of secondary pitches. His control reached a whole new level last season, but some giveback with his walk rate should be expected. Regardless, if he sticks in the rotation all season, Martinez could easily set another new career high in wins. Read Past Outlooks

Allows three homers in loss
Martinez (4-7) took the loss against the Tigers on Friday, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts over five innings.
ANALYSIS
Martinez surrendered three solo homers and allowed 10 hard-hit balls while generating just seven whiffs on 89 pitches. He still entered the sixth inning with a chance at his eighth quality start in nine outings but was pulled after walking the leadoff man and was ultimately charged with another run. The 34-year-old will take a 3.92 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 58:18 K:BB across 80.1 innings into a home matchup with the Twins next week.

Martinez, who opted out of the final two years of his contract with San Diego in November, recently agreed to terms with Cincinnati that includes an increased salary and opt-out after the 2024 season. The 33-year-old mixes five pitches effectively, with his 80 mph changeup (46.5% whiff) and curveball his best offerings. He produced a career-best 23 percent strikeout rate last season to supplement his elite ground ball rate (53.8%). Martinez has been excellent since his return to the States in 2022 and is capable of starting, closing, setup duties or long relief. His versatility should benefit the Reds pitching staff, but it's worth noting he performed better across nine starts (2.32 ERA, 1.08 WHIP over 42.2 innings) last year than he did over 54 relief appearances (4.12 ERA, 1.37 WHIP over 67.2 innings).
