2025 Fantasy Outlook
Montas endured another rocky season in 2024, though he still landed a two-year, $34 million contract with the Mets in December. The right-hander split the campaign between the Brewers and Reds and finished with a 4.84 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 148:66 K:BB across 150.2 innings. He pitched better after being traded to Milwaukee with a 70:25 K:BB over 57.1 innings, but he still went through some ups and downs with a 4.55 ERA. Montas made just one appearance in 2023 while recovering from shoulder surgery, and his 2022 campaign was also a bit disappointing with a 4.05 ERA in 27 starts between the A's and Yankees. He allowed a career-worst 42.3 percent hard-hit rate last season and a 1.4 HR/9, but there's optimism for a turnaround given the Mets recent success with free-agent pitchers such as Sean Manaea. However, even with a rebound year in 2025, Montas' 8.8 K/9 since 2022 limits his fantasy upside. Read Past Outlooks

Return could get pushed up
Montas (lat) is set to make a rehab start Friday with Triple-A Syracuse, but it could be his final one with the Mets needing to replace Kodai Senga (hamstring) in the big-league rotation, Will Sammon of the Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Carlos Mendoza downplayed the idea that Montas' recovery would be accelerated in the wake of Senga's injury, however. "The decision with Montas is what's best for Montas," Mendoza said Thursday. "We are not going to rush because of what happened today. If he needs another [rehab start], we will give him another one." The right-hander built up to 76 pitches in his last start for Syracuse on June 8, so if he looks good Friday, it could be enough to convince the team he's ready for his 2025 debut. Montas signed a one year, $17 million contract with the Mets this offseason that included a player option for 2026 after producing a 4.84 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 148:66 K:BB over 150.2 innings last year between the Reds and Brewers.

Montas collected a 6.35 ERA in eight regular-season starts for the Yankees in 2022 after being acquired from the Athletics via trade before going down with a shoulder injury. The right-hander did make it back for one playoff appearance but wound up needing surgery on the shoulder in February. It was expected to be a season-ending operation, but Montas worked his way back for one late-season relief appearance, providing some hope that he's past the shoulder problems. At his best, Montas is a hard thrower capable of piling up strikeouts with his nasty splitter. His velocity was solid but down a bit in his one 2023 appearance, and it's fair to wonder whether he'll ever regain his pre-op stuff. Montas' workload figures to be limited even if he stays healthy given that he's basically coming off a lost season. He currently remains a free agent.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Likely hitting open market
Montas has a $20 million mutual option with a $2 million buyout for 2025, per Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, which the Brewers are likely to decline.
ANALYSIS
Montas was a trade-deadline acquisition for Milwaukee and delivered a 4.55 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 70:25 K:BB across 57.1 frames in 11 regular-season starts for his new team. Mutual options are rarely exercised by both sides, and in this case the cost-conscious Brewers are a sure bet to pay the buyout rather than shell out an additional $18 million.
