Remains in rotation

June 12, 2025
Walter is slated to start Sunday's game against the Twins in Houston, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Walter will receive a second straight turn through Houston's six-man rotation while the Astros remain short on healthy arms with six starting pitchers currently residing on the injured list. Only one of those six injured pitchers (J.P. France) has resumed facing hitters at this point, so Walter could be in store for an extended run in the rotation. He's pitched well in both of his two starts with Houston this season, striking out five over five shutout innings May 20 at Tampa Bay and recording another five strikeouts over six innings of two-run ball this past Sunday in Cleveland. The 28-year-old southpaw has enjoyed a similar level of success at Triple-A Sugar Land, where he compiled a 2.08 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and 49:7 K:BB in 47.2 innings prior to getting called up last week.

Walter has a spot on the 40-man roster and will compete as a backend starter during spring training. Beyond Lucas Giolito and Brayan Bello, Walter's name can be thrown into the mix with Tanner Houck, Garrett Whitlock and Nick Pivetta. The 27-year-old lefty had a rocky first half, which included a 6.26 ERA over 23 innings mid-summer for Boston. He wasn't much better before that at Triple-A Worcester; however, the right-hander thrived during the second half upon his return to Triple-A (1.48 ERA over 30 innings). He attributed his success to pounding the strike zone. That's what he did during a breakout 2021 campaign to put himself on the prospect radar. The organization will probably want Walter to build off the second-half success and begin 2024 at Worcester. If he's to break camp with Boston, it will be likely be as a multi-inning relief arm.
Walter began 2022 at Double-A Portland and was promoted to Triple-A Worcester after he posted a 2.88 ERA with 68 strikeouts across 50 innings, but he made only two starts for Worcester before he was lost for the season with a neck strain. The left-hander was added to the Red Sox's 40-man roster in November to protect him from being selected during the Rule 5 draft, which clearly indicates how he's valued by the organization. Boston's rotation has more question marks than locks, which should provide Walter the chance to make his big-league debut in 2023. However, he's likely to open the campaign at Triple-A and may need to pitch well there to receive that opportunity.
