Ben Casparius

Ben Casparius

26-Year-Old PitcherRP
Los Angeles Dodgers
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Casparius has a pair of monster breaking balls and successfully navigated his first season pitching in the Pacific Coast League. The 25-year-old righty logged a 3.36 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 72:35 K:BB in 67 innings across 16 appearances for Triple-A Oklahoma City. He has been consistently mediocre from a control standpoint, logging walk rates between 10.5 percent and 12.5 percent in his last eight professional assignments dating back to Single-A in 2021 and including his 8.1 innings in the majors in 2024. While his 95.6 mph fastball has good velocity, it was the one pitch big leaguers were able to handle, logging a .342 wOBA and .396 xwOBA against it. Even so, if just his command or fastball improved slightly, Casparius might be able to ride his slider and curveball to significant strikeout totals working as a big-league starter. The Dodgers helped Casparius get to this point, but their internal depth may also prevent him from getting many big-league starts in 2025. He's a nice trade chip for the Dodgers and a solid sleeper in dynasty and redraft leagues, even though there's still a chance he ends up a high-leverage reliever. Read Past Outlooks

June 11, 2025
Manager Dave Roberts said after Wednesday's 5-2 win over San Diego that Casparius will operate as a traditional starter in his next appearance, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports. "Where we're at now, currently, he's certainly showing that he's one of five [starters]," Roberts said of Casparius. "The next time he's on the mound, it'll be as a starter."
ANALYSIS
Casparius technically made his second start of the season Wednesday, but he was deployed as something between an opener and a traditional starter after he had previously been working out of the bullpen. The right-hander was still stretched out enough to give the Dodgers four innings and 54 pitches in the outing, finishing the night with two strikeouts and one earned run allowed on three hits and two walks. The 26-year-old has found success no matter how the Dodgers have used him this season, as he now owns a shiny 2.86 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 46:9 K:BB across 44 innings. He'll still likely be on somewhat of a workload restriction in his next start -- which is expected to fall early next week at home versus the Padres -- but Casparius could be capable of giving the Dodgers five or six innings and around 70 to 80 pitches.
