2025 Fantasy Outlook
It was another tough season for Hayes, who hit a new career low with only 23 points (13 goals, 10 assists) in 64 games played. He was deployed the least out of any season in his career, averaging just 12:03 of ice time per game, and he failed to reach 100 shots on goal for the first time in his career as well. If not for his best shooting percentage in the last five seasons (13.3), his production could have been even worse. He's not overly physical and not a big shot blocker, offering little fantasy value and upside even though the 33-year-old still might see a power-play role, where he produced four goals and three assists in 2024-25. It certainly seems like the best days of Hayes’ career are long in the rearview mirror. Read Past Outlooks

Out at least one month
Hayes (upper body) won't be reevaluated for a month and will miss the start of the 2025-26 campaign, Wes Crosby of NHL.com reports Friday.
ANALYSIS
Based on his timeline, Hayes figures to miss at least the first two weeks of the upcoming campaign, though it could certainly be longer. The bigger concern for fantasy players will likely be the fact that an absence of that length will only give the Pens' up-and-coming prospects more time to establish themselves at the NHL level. The veteran Hayes was already likely going to struggle to keep himself in the lineup; this setback could make it that much harder. Expect Hayes to land on IR before the season starts up Oct. 7 versus the Rangers.

Following four seasons with the Flyers, with a year in St. Louis in between, Hayes will switch sides in the Battle of Pennsylvania after being traded to the Penguins in the offseason. The team is buying low on the 32-year-old center after he posted a career-low 29 points in 79 regular-season outings with the Blues, going without a power-play goal for the first time in his career. For a team that is reportedly looking to get younger and faster according to general manager Kyle Dubas, the towering Hayes doesn't exactly fit the bill - though he could be a decent net-front presence on a power-play that struggled during the 2023-24 campaign. Barring a significant decline in his skills courtesy of Father Time, Hayes should be capable of getting back to being a 40-point producer while filling a bottom-six role for the Pens this season.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

May struggle for minutes
Hayes, who ended last season on the shelf with a lower-body injury, could see limited minutes under new head coach Dan Muse this season, Josh Yohe of The Athletic reports Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Hayes has failed to reach the 30-point threshold in either of his two seasons with the Penguins and is very clearly on the backside of his career. With Pittsburgh looking to get younger, with the exception of Sidney Crosby, Hayes could find himself watching from the press box more often than not this season. The hiring of Muse was aimed at helping the team's prospects develop, which means Hayes could be scratched in favor of Thomas Novak and Blake Lizotte.
