Kovacevic provided one goal and a career-high 17 points across 81 regular-season outings in 2024-25. He had one goal and four assists in his first seven appearances, but his offensive contributions were few and far between afterward. Kovacevic also picked up 72 PIM, 76 shots, 99 blocks and 102 hits. He missed the final two games of New Jersey's first-round defeat against Carolina in the playoffs and underwent offseason knee surgery. Kovacevic is not expected to be ready when training camp opens, and he won't be available for Opening Night in the 2025-26 campaign. The bigger change with Kovacevic's return is the potential exit of Dougie Hamilton, who was a healthy scratch Sunday. The Devils are deep on the blue line and can afford to make a move, but it would likely be Simon Nemec who benefits the most if Hamilton is ultimately traded, while Kovacevic may still pick up some extra defensive minutes.

Kovacevic was in and out of the Montreal lineup last season, appearing in 62 games and posting six goals and 13 points, offensive numbers right in line with the year prior. The Devils clearly saw something they liked, however, as the club dealt a fourth-round pick to the Canadiens for Kovacevic in late June. With veteran Brendan Dillon signed to a hefty deal in free agency, there doesn't appear to be a full-time spot for Kovacevic on the New Jersey blueline to begin the year. He figures to serve as the No. 7 defenseman for the club, meaning there's no fantasy value here.
