The Bills signed Badgley to their practice squad Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
With Tyler Bass (hip) out for the season and with head coach Sean McDermott ruling out Matt Prater (quadriceps) for Week 16, the Bills were in need of a kicker for Sunday's game in Cleveland. The team held a tryout Tuesday featuring Badgley and Matthew Wright, and the former ultimately emerged from the workout with a contract. Since Prater is being viewed as week-to-week, Buffalo could still look to add Wright or another kicker to its practice squad in the coming days, but look for Badgley to get elevated to the roster ahead of Sunday's contest. Badgley most recently served as the Colts' kicker for seven games earlier this season, converting 10 of 11 field-goal tries and 18 of 21 extra-point attempts.

Badgley was the Chargers' kicker from 2018 to 2020, then bounced around to four different teams in 2021 and 2022, eventually landing in Detroit where he subsequently spent most of 2023 on the practice squad. He finally got another chance late in 2023, replacing a struggling Riley Patterson in Week 15 and making all seven of his field-goal attempts (plus 24 of 26 PATs) across four regular-season games and three playoff appearances. Badgley looked like the favorite to handle Detroit's kicking work heading into training camp, but he then suffered a season-ending hamstring tear during the first week of summer practice. He'll focus on rehab this fall and hope to bounce back in 2025.

Bates has been impressive kicking in the UFL, where his first kick was a game-winning 64-yard field goal. He has made three kicks of 60-plus yards and 17 of 22 field-goal attempts overall. Badgley made all four of his field-goal attempts in four games with the Lions in 2023 but missed two of 15 PAT tries. Bates' bigger leg could give the newcomer the advantage in a kicking competition that may not be decided until after the preseason.
