2025 Fantasy Outlook
Prater has played 254 regular-season games, but just four of those were in 2024, as he didn't play again after coming out of Week 4 with a knee injury. He's now a free agent with his 41st birthday coming up in August, after Chad Ryland enjoyed a strong season filling in as Arizona's kicker. Prater has a strong enough track record, and a strong enough leg, that he should find a chance to compete for a job if he decides to continue playing. He made eight of 11 attempts from 50-plus yards in 2023, at age 39, and his 81 career makes of 50-plus are the most in NFL history. Read Past Outlooks
Added to 53-man roster
The Bills signed Prater off their practice squad Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Though Buffalo would have had the ability to elevate Prater from the practice squad in advance of two more games, the Bills may have chosen to sign the 41-year-old to the 53-man roster to avoid having him being poached by the 49ers or Falcons, both of whom could be breaking in new kickers in Week 2. Prater is likely to stick around as the Bills' kicker for the duration of the absence of Tyler Bass (hip/groin), who was placed on injured reserve prior to the start of the season and will miss at least three more games. The veteran Prater proved to be reliable in his Bills debut this past Sunday, knocking down both of his point-after attempts in addition to converting on field-goal tries of 25, 43 and 32 yards in Buffalo's 41-40 win over Baltimore, the last of which was the game-winner as time expired.

Prater doesn't seem to have lost his touch, though he'll turn 40 in August and is entering his 18th NFL season. While he got just 23 PATs in 2023 for a lousy Arizona team -- en route to finishing 22nd among kickers in fantasy points -- Prater made nine of 12 field-goal attempts from 50-plus yards, including a 62-yarder. There's potential for a productive fantasy season ahead if the dome-based Cardinals improve and provide more PATs and chip shots, though it's still somewhat of a long shot for Prater to rank among the leaders in overall kicking volume while attached to one of the younger and more star-deficient teams in the league.
