2025 Fantasy Outlook
Akers remains a free agent as of May, and with two Achilles' tendon tears in his injury history he will always face an uphill struggle to see NFL playing time from this point. Akers should get a chance to make some roster, though, even if he is only signed right before or even during training camp. Akers will only be 26 in June, and when healthy he still flashes standout athleticism, particularly as a power runner. Akers got his foot into the door in Minnesota last year – his second stint with the team, and acquired by trade from Houston – and as the year went on Akers continued to establish himself as Minnesota's power-rushing specialist behind Aaron Jones. It's possible that Akers could appeal to some team in the same role in 2025, though Akers ever being a starter or passing-down viable seems unlikely by now. Read Past Outlooks

Gets chance with Saints
The Saints signed Akers to a contract Friday, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
In his fifth NFL campaign in 2024, Akers split time between the Texans and Vikings, recording 104 carries for 444 yards (4.3 YPC) and two touchdowns and 14 catches (on 18 targets) for 68 yards and three more TDs. He entered the offseason as an unrestricted free agent and went without much interest until New Orleans' mandatory minicamp this week, when he worked out for the team. Akers showed enough to earn another opportunity, but he joins a crowded backfield behind No. 1 option Alvin Kamara along with Kendre Miller and rookie sixth-rounder Devin Neal.

Akers' ill-fated career hit another setback in 2024. After finally wearing out his welcome for good with the Rams, he got traded to the Vikings after just one game and seems set up for success in a backfield that was looking to replace Dalvin Cook. Akers never really got on track for Minnesota though, averaging 3.6 yards per carry before tearing his left Achilles tendon in Week 9. He previously tore his right Achilles tendon in 2021. Now a free agent, he'll have to prove he's healthy before he gets a look from another team.

Minicamp tryout nets deal
Akers agreed to a one-year deal with the Saints on Friday after a successful minicamp tryout, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran back found a tepid market for his services over the first several months of free agency, but he made enough of an impression on the Saints' coaching staff during two minicamp practices this week. Despite the fact he's already put in five seasons at the NFL level, Akers won't turn 26 until later in June, although he's already torn both Achilles tendons since entering the league in 2020.
