CFL Betting: CFL Bets and Parlays for Week 9

A quartet of highly capable veteran quarterbacks with multiple Grey Cup titles between them are the focus of our two bets this week as we inch closer to the halfway point of what has been an unpredictable CFL season from a betting standpoint. With some vulnerable pass defenses in action in these two games, we'll look at some same-game parlays that bank on some solid passing days.

Read on for a look at which Week 9 CFL betting scenarios catch my eye on FanDuel Sportsbook.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Edmonton Elks (Saturday, August 2, 3:00 p.m. ET)

Bo Levi Mitchell and Cody Fajardo have both filled out their share of stat sheets throughout their prolific careers, and this certainly shapes up as a game where the environment could be ripe for an offensive showcase.

Mitchell is averaging the second-most passing yards per game of his career (314.4), while his 68.8 percent completion rate is a career best. The veteran signal-caller has a 15:3 TD:INT as well, and he's eclipsed 275 passing yards in five of seven contests. Mitchell is also drawing the most inviting matchup in the CFL for quarterbacks, as Edmonton has surrendered 319.7 passing yards per game at a league-high 78.4 percent completion rate while also conceding a co-CFL-high 15 touchdown passes and league-high 17 completions of 30+ yards.

Fajardo took over as the Elks' starting quarterback in Week 8 and immediately paid dividends in the form of much steadier play under center, throwing for 346 yards and two touchdowns while completing an blistering 78.8 percent of his passes against the Roughriders. The two-time Grey Cup champion has the experience to capitalize on what should be a game environment conducive to offense.

Hamilton and Edmonton have allowed 27.0 and 31.8 points per game, respectively, and the Elks are also surrendering a league-high 7.5 yards per play. As such, a same-game parlay that brings the projected total down four points and banks on Mitchell having one of his trademark games gives us a decent price that we can work with.

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Montreal Alouettes (Saturday, August 2, 7:00 p.m. ET)

The Roughriders are 6-1, but their pass defense has not been that of an upper-echelon team. Saskatchewan has allowed a league-high 331.6 passing yards per game and the second-highest completion rate (72.4 percent) in the league, and the Riders have also surrendered the second-most touchdown passes (14) and second-highest passer efficiency rating the CFL (105.2).

The Riders have a solid but still modest (relative to record) +31 point differential, as their defense hasn't allowed them to pull away from many teams – five of their six wins have come by single digits. Meanwhile, the host Alouettes are 5-2 in their one right and have a +33 point differential in their own right while allowing the second-fewest points per game (22.6). The Als have also given up a league-low 321.4 total yards per contest and 5.9 yards per play.

Even though No. 1 quarterback Davis Alexander is on the injured list, McLeod Bethel-Thompson is a highly capable No. 2 that can still function effectively as a starter for a stretch of games. MBT proved as much in Week 7 against the Stampeders, passing for 280 yards while completing 75.0 percent of his throws. The two-time Grey Cup champ therefore has some bright prospects for this matchup, which should seen Montreal put the ball a good amount as the hosts try to keep up with Harris and all his weapons.

The Als are three-point home underdogs, so we'll stretch that number out to 6.5 using FD's Alt Spread option and pair that bet with one that includes a yardage threshold Bethel-Thompson is very capable of eclipsing.
