2025 Fantasy Outlook
Schwellenbach was one of the biggest surprises of the 2024 season, as he posted a 3.35 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 127:23 K:BB across 123.2 innings spanning 21 starts for Atlanta after getting the call in late May. He was especially stingy down the stretch, going 5-2 with a 2.47 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and six strikeouts for every one walk in his final 73 innings. While he had some prospect pedigree as a second-round pick in 2021, this level of success was impossible to foresee for a player that had not pitched above the High-A level coming into the season. After missing all of 2022 following Tommy John surgery, Schwellenbach made his professional debut in 2023, pitching a total of 65 innings that year. In another day and age, the jump from 65 innings to 168.2 total frames last season would scare some drafters off, but conventional wisdom regarding pitching injuries has been challenged in recent years. Most will be eager to draft an arm of this caliber, so long as the pitcher is ostensibly healthy in the moment. A jump in strikeouts is possible with his six-pitch mix and 96th percentile chase rate. Fans six in loss
Schwellenbach (1-2) yielded four runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk over six innings Sunday, striking out six and taking a loss against Arizona.
ANALYSIS
Schwellenbach never found a groove Sunday, coughing up a run in each of the first, second, fourth and fifth innings. He tossed 58 of 88 pitches for strikes and generated 16 whiffs, including six each with the slider and splitter. After allowing only one run through 20 innings to start his 2025 campaign, Schwellenbach has been tagged with 13 runs (11 earned) over his last 17.2 frames. He still owns a strong 2.87 ERA with a 33:6 K:BB. Schwellenbach is expected to face the Dodgers at home next weekend.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Atlanta gave Schwellenbach $1 million after drafting him out of Nebraska in the second round in 2021 and he had Tommy John surgery right after the draft. He put up good numbers in 2023 as a 23-year-old in the lower levels, but his stuff ticked up in 2024, with his fastball going from a 93-94 mph pitch to a 95-96 mph offering. He generated groundballs over 55 percent of the time at High-A and Double-A and was surprisingly summoned to the big-league rotation after just two starts at Double-A. There's nothing about Schwellenbach's arsenal or command that would cap his short-term potential, but even as an older prospect, it's quite the jump in competition to the majors after logging only 13 innings above High-A, so there could be some understandable bumps in the road.
