2025 Fantasy Outlook
It feels like Detmers has been around forever, but the left-hander is still just 25 years old entering the 2025 season. He went 3-0 with two earned runs allowed over 17.2 innings in his first three starts last season, but then went 0-6 with an 8.93 ERA over his next eight to earn a trip back to Triple-A. Home runs doomed his return in September, as he served up eight homers in 24.1 innings down the stretch to push him up to an ugly 6.70 ERA for the season. Both lefties and righties slugged over .500 against Detmers last season. He still has multiple minor-league options remaining and will have to earn his spot with the Angels in spring training. Detmers' 26.8 percent strikeout rate over the past two seasons -- 16th among pitchers that have totaled 230 combined innings in that span -- and the fact that he has a no-hitter under his belt offer a shred of hope that the 2020 first-round pick could turn a corner. The Angels placed Detmers on the 15-day injured list Thursday with left elbow inflammation.
Analysis
Detmers had to depart Wednesday's game against the Twins due to the injury after not liking how the ball was coming out of his hand. The injury may end the southpaw's season as he won't be eligible to return until the final series of the season. In a corresponding move to placing him on the 15-day injured list, the Angels recalled Chase Silseth on Thursday.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
2022
2021
Detmers delivered a surprise performance in 2022 by pitching a perfect game and posting a 3.77 ERA for the season out of nowhere, but he unsurprisingly came back to earth last year with a 4.48 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 168:60 K:BB across 148.2 innings. He found an extra tick on his fastball in 2023 (94.4 mph) and upped his strikeout rate to 26.2 percent, but a 9.3 percent walk rate and 1.15 HR/9 both took a step back from the previous season. A 40.9 percent hard-hit rate was also worse, and his results appear to be well earned with a 4.45 xERA. The Angels lack any real rotation depth, especially with Shohei Ohtani departing via free agency, which should lock Detmers in for regular starts again in 2024. Detmers will turn 25 years old in July and still has some upside, but he's not a stable option for fantasy managers beyond providing innings and decent strikeout numbers. Still, you could do much worse to round out a rotation, especially in deeper leagues.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Likely trade piece?
Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com listed Detmers as a candidate to be traded ahead of the July 31 deadline.
Analysis
Detmers has been working out of the bullpen this season for the first time in his MLB career, and he's settled in after surrendering 16 runs in his first 12 outings of the year. The right-hander has a 0.35 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 36:13 K:BB across his past 26 innings, and he's worked his way into a high-leverage role with two saves and seven holds. That body of work should make Detmers a strong trade candidate, but the Angels aren't likely to part with him lightly since he has three more years of arbitration eligibility.
