2025 Fantasy Outlook
Arenado's power output has trickled down every year since he arrived in St. Louis and it bottomed out to just 16 home runs in 2024. Part of that was probably out of his control with fly ball distance being down league-wide, but he also posted career lows in average exit velocity (86.3 mph), hard-hit rate (31.6 percent) and barrel rate (3.2 percent) and one of his lowest fly ball rates (39.1 percent). Dating back to August of 2023, Arenado hasn't hit more than four long balls in any of his last eight months. A rebound is possible, but with cavernous Busch Stadium as his home and his 34th birthday coming shortly after Opening Day, it's difficult to say a bounce-back is probable. Read Past Outlooks

Taking seat Monday
Arenado is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Marlins.
Analysis
Arenado has gone 1-for-13 at the plate during the first four games of the Cardinals' homestand and appears to be getting a routine day off Monday. Thomas Saggese will cover third base and bat eighth for the Cardinals.

By Arenado's lofty standards, his 2023 season was a disappointment. He totaled just 26 home runs, his fewest in a full season since 2014. His average exit velocity, barrel rate and hard-hit rate all ranked in the bottom 40 percent of the league, per Statcast. It wasn't a disastrous season by any means as Arenado was an All-Star and still ranked above league average by most offensive measures, but it was a sizable step back from the previous year when he was an MVP finalist in the National League. The final month of the season was particularly rough as Arenado limped to the finish line with a .509 OPS in his final 17 games before back spasms ended his campaign. Despite the missed time at the end, Arenado still cleared 600 plate appearances, meaning he's now done so in each of the last eight full seasons. He's probably a future Hall of Famer and should be expected to bounce back to an extent, but his best days are likely behind him as he nears 33 years old.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Could be Suarez backup plan
Arenado is drawing trade interest from teams as a backup plan to Eugenio Suarez, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
Arenado has a full no-trade clause, and even if he agrees to waive that, the Cardinals would likely have to pay down some of what remains on his contract. The veteran third baseman has two years and $42 million remaining on his deal, although $6 million of it is deferred and the Rockies are covering $5 million. Arenado remains an excellent defender at third base, but his offense has continued to decline, with the 34-year-old slashing just .237/.298/.371 with 10 home runs this season. One potential landing spot for Arenado was crossed off the list when the Yankees traded for Ryan McMahon, but the Cubs, Mariners, Tigers, Brewers, Reds, Astros and Phillies are among the clubs known to have interest in adding third base help.
