Rest-of-Season Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Among active players, only Giancarlo Stanton has more seasons with 25-plus homers than Machado. The Human Statue has 10 such seasons, while Machado and Mike Trout are tied at nine. Machado continues to produce at a consistent level, as 2024 was his 10th career season with at least 600 plate appearances, something only Carlos Santana and Freddie Freeman have done more frequently. Last season offered a view of Machado's younger days with him stealing double-digit bases for the first time since the 2021 season and nearly swiping as many in 2024 (11) as he did the previous two seasons combined (12). He pulled that off despite another season in which his walk rate declined, as it has now each of the past four years. He still makes excellent contact, but the lower walk rate means the batting average is going to be at the mercy of the batted-ball luck dragons. There is little reason to think Machado will not have another 600-plus plate appearances with the voluminous numbers that go along with that playing time. Consistent production such as what Machado offers is difficult to find in these volatile days. Read Past Outlooks

Machado collected 30 homers and 91 RBI to go along with a .781 OPS -- his lowest since 2017 -- in 138 games last season. He played through an elbow injury for much of the campaign and made 33 appearances as a designated hitter before undergoing surgery to repair a tendon immediately after the regular season. The procedure carries a 4-to-6 month recovery timeline, which clouds his availability for the start of the 2024 campaign. He provided strong defense in his 105 games at the hot corner and still delivered plenty of power despite the injury with a second straight 30-homer season. Machado isn't likely to be at full strength for the start of spring training, but it's possible he's ready to go by Opening Day. He could also be limited to serving as the designated hitter early on to help ease him back into things at third base, but his true availability won't be known until he gets further into his recovery and rehab work. Even if he does end up missing some time in April, Machado is likely to be a strong fantasy producer in 2024.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Extension still possible?
Machado told reporters on Friday that he is still open to working out an extension with the Padres, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Machado had previously stated that he and his agent had set a Feb. 16 deadline in order to sign an extension, but the infielder sounded more open to a possible long-term deal Friday. "You know, nothing's out of question, Machado said. "Obviously, they know how much San Diego means to me and what I want to be here. At the end of the day, they knew exactly where I was when that deadline was set. And we'll see what happens. Our main focus right now is playing baseball. We'll see." If Machado does hit free agency after the 2023 season, he'll assuredly be one of the most sought-after bats in the class.
