2025 Fantasy Outlook
Brubaker held some end-of-roster appeal in deep fantasy leagues in 2022 when he fanned 147 batters over 144 innings with Pittsburgh, but he hasn't pitched in the majors since. The right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery in April of 2023, and after being traded to the Yankees while still rehabbing last March, he had his recovery halted due to an oblique injury. Brubaker did get into eight minor-league contests, and he posted a fine 2.70 ERA and 0.96 WHIP but definitely showed some rust with a 9:8 K:BB over 16.2 frames. Despite the recent injuries, the Yankees re-signed Brubaker to a one-year deal, and his chance of breaking camp with the club is boosted by his lack of minor-league options. His most likely role is as a middle- or long-relief option capable of stepping in for the occasional spot start, which isn't a recipe for fantasy relevance. Read Past Outlooks

Strikes out six in rehab start
Brubaker (ribs) struck out six batters and allowed three hits and two walks over 3.2 scoreless innings in his rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
ANALYSIS
Making the fifth start of his rehab assignment and his second in a row at the Triple-A level, Brubaker built up to 67 pitches and generated five swings and misses on the day. The right-hander is being stretched out as a starter as he works his way back from the three broken ribs he sustained during spring training, but it's unclear if he'll be installed in the New York rotation once his 30-day rehab window expires and he gets activated from the 60-day injured list. Ryan Yarbrough has performed capably as the Yankees' No. 5 starter over the past month, and Marcus Stroman (knee) is also in the midst of a rehab assignment and will be in consideration for a rotation spot once healthy.

If nothing else, Brubaker was expected to eat a significant number of innings for the Pirates in 2023. There was also some reason to be optimistic that his surface stats would improve after he showed growth in limiting the long ball, but all hopes were dashed after he dealt with forearm and elbow issues late in spring training. Shortly thereafter, it was announced that he would need Tommy John surgery. That not only ended his 2023 campaign, but it also leaves his status for 2024 unclear. According to most recent reports, he is throwing from flat ground up to 120 feet with the goal of making his season debut shortly after the All-Star break. As a result, he's safe to avoid in nearly all fantasy formats, with the best-case scenario being he becomes a streaming option upon his return.
