Rest-of-Season Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Palacios earned 264 plate appearances in the majors in 2023 but was shuffled to the bottom of the right field depth chart in Pittsburgh in 2024. He began the season in the minors and remained there until early July when he was recalled to the majors in a swap of roster spots in what was essentially a swap of roster spots with Edward Olivares. Palacios earned only 78 plate appearances in Pittsburgh while serving on the large side of a platoon in right field before suffering a hamstring injury. He remains in the mix for playing time in right field entering 2025, though he's unlikely to earn a significant role as the Pirates have younger options such as Nick Yorke and Billy Cook also contending for playing time. If Palacios does fall into regular plate appearances, he could be a decent source of power and speed. Across 431 career plate appearances, he has delivered 12 home runs and seven stolen bases. That's paired with only a .230 batting average, so the poor batting average and lack of projected playing time make Palacios a name to ignore in most league formats. Read Past Outlooks

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Palacios joined the Pirates for the 2023 season, his third organization in as many campaigns. He was also afforded his most significant sample in the majors, as he racked up 264 plate appearances while primarily manning corner outfield positions in Pittsburgh. His surface-level stats won't show it, but there were some positives to take out of that sample as Palacios dropped his strikeout rate to a palatable 21.6 percent. He also managed a 10.3 percent barrel rate and 109.6 max exit velocity. In order to truly leverage that raw power, Palacios will need to lift the ball more frequently. He had a well below-average 7.4 degree launch angle and 32.6 percent flyball rate, with the end result being a forgettable .174 ISO and .413 slugging percentage. Based on Palacios' big-league sample to this point, that doesn't seem likely. However, if he falls into an everyday job - a possibility if the Pirates don't add to their outfield this offseason -- his progress could be worth monitoring in deeper formats, especially because he should also chip in some stolen bases with consistent playing time.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Should be back for 2024
GM Ben Cherington indicated Palacios is likely to be part of the Pirates in 2024, according to Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old entered the campaign with just 91 big-league plate appearances but apparently showed enough with a .692 OPS in 91 games for Pittsburgh to be back for 2024. Palacios isn't eligible for arbitration until 2027, so it's not a surprise he'll stick around as a cheap outfield option. Given the Pirates' recent willingness to give their top prospects chances in the majors, Palacios may need to start strong next season in order to maintain his spot on the roster.
