2025 Fantasy Outlook
Bautista was sidelined for the entire 2024 campaign, but he began throwing off the mound in August and will be 16 months removed from Tommy John surgery by February. The 6-foot-5 hurler is not expected to have any restrictions at the start of spring training and as long as he looks good during Grapefruit League play, he should regain the closer role for Baltimore heading into 2025. "The Mountain" emerged as one of the top closers in the game during the 2023 season, posting 33 saves with a 1.48 ERA and 0.92 WHIP over 61 innings with a 46.4 percent strikeout rate that was tops among qualified relievers. Achieving those types of numbers might be a tall order coming off a major injury, especially since Bautista has a 10 percent walk rate for his career. Expect some regression, but don't wait too long to click his name in the draft room, as his upside warrants a top-5 selection among closers. Read Past Outlooks

Shoulder
July 28, 2025
Orioles interim manager Tony Mansolino said Monday that Bautista is going to be "out a while" after an MRI showed significant swelling in the pitcher's right shoulder, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
The silver lining is that Bautista does not have any structural damage. However, with the amount of inflammation in his shoulder, he's looking at an absence that will last weeks, not days. With the Orioles not in playoff contention, it's fair to wonder how much of a contribution, if any, he will make the rest of this season. Seranthony Dominguez is the current favorite to see the bulk of the save chances for Baltimore down the stretch, though he is a possibility to be traded.

How does Felix Bautista compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Bautista is expected to miss the entire 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in October. Prior to the injury, which he suffered in late-August, "The Mountain" had arguably emerged as MLB's top closer. Bautista compiled a 1.48 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 110:26 K:BB ratio over 61 innings to go along with 33 saves. This mark was still good for 3rd in the American League despite Bautista missing the last month and change of the season. His 46.4% strikeout percentage was tops among qualified relievers, while his 4.45 WPA and 2.03 gmLI were 2nd and 5th, respectively. Assuming Bautista avoids any setbacks in his recovery, look for him to return for spring training in 2025.
After pitching at three levels of the Orioles' minor league system in 2021, Bautista made the Opening Day roster last season. The rookie showcased his big arm by throwing the seventh-most pitches (203) at 100 mph or greater. Control has always been an issue for Bautista, but he was able to harness it enough (3.2 BB/9) to quickly ascend Baltimore's high leverage ladder. The 6-foot-5 hurler was dominant in a setup role before the O's midseason trade of Jorge Lopez created a vacancy at closer. "The Mountain" made the decision easy for Brandon Hyde and finished 2022 with 15 saves, 14 holds and a 34.8% strikeout rate good for ninth among qualified relievers. Bautista's splitter generated a 53.3% whiff rate that was second best in the league on that pitch. He doesn't use his slider often (12% usage), but has a similarly good whiff rate (42.5%) should he decide to throw it more. There's some risk for 2023, but Bautista's upside should make him one of the top 10 closers off the board.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Trade seen as unlikely
PBaltimore Orioles
July 17, 2025
The Orioles are listening to trade inquiries regarding Bautista but are unlikely to deal the reliever, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
Bautista has pitched well in his first year back from Tommy John surgery, posting a 2.41 ERA and 48:20 K:BB over 33.2 innings while notching 18 saves. However, he has not been as dominant as he was pre-surgery, and if the Orioles are convinced he will eventually get back there, now would not be the opportune time to sell him. Bautista is also under team control for two additional seasons, and Baltimore is aiming to return to contention in 2026.
