The Blue Jays signed Overton to a minor-league contract Wednesday and assigned him to Triple-A Buffalo.
ANALYSIS
Overton had been a free agent for nearly a month, after the Mets released him shortly after spring training concluded. The 31-year-old righty has previously made 10 starts at the big-league level from 2021 through 2023, but he's struggled to bounce back after undergoing Tommy John surgery nearly two years ago. Overton finished the 2024 season at Triple-A Louisville in the Reds organization, logging a 9.12 ERA and 1.74 WHIP over 24.2 innings.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Overton was a nice story for the Reds early in the 2022 season, posting a 1.82 ERA and 0.89 WHIP over four starts in April and May. Unfortunately, that's when he went down with a stress reaction in his lower back which wound up sidelining him for nearly four months before he made a late-season return as a reliever. As a 29-year-old who had just a 14:11 K:BB over 33 innings, Overton's numbers warrant plenty of skepticism. He didn't produce weak contact or induce grounders, and he managed to give up just one homer even though two of his starts came at Great American Ball Park and one was at Coors Field. Overton deserves a chance to compete for a rotation spot, but it's unlikely he'll be fantasy relevant even if he wins one.

Luis Cessa could perhaps be leapfrogged as well if Overton shows a little more swing-and-miss upside in camp this spring.
