Ceddanne Rafaela

Ceddanne Rafaela

24-Year-Old OutfielderOF
Boston Red Sox
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Last spring, Red Sox manager Alex Cora stated that Rafaela would make the Opening Day roster only if he earned an everyday job in the outfield. Injuries to multiple infielders softened Cora's stance, and then Rafaela's .896 OPS in the spring made the decision easy. Rafaela ended up missing only 10 games, seven in September. He doesn't hit the ball hard, and his plate discipline is poor. However, Rafaela is just 24 years old and plays Gold Glove-level defense in center field while being able to fill in as a middle infielder. Rafaela's athleticism buys him time to improve on a 31st percentile hard-hit rate, 46th percentile barrel rate and 26.4 percent strikeout rate. The hand-eye coordination possessed by elite defenders often translates to the batter's box. Rafaela has the physical tools and opportunity, and now it's up to him to translate them to better quality of contact. Read Past Outlooks

Starting in center field after all
OFBoston Red Sox
June 9, 2025
Rafaela will start in center field and bat eighth in Monday's game versus the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Rafaela was penciled into the right field spot in the first lineup the Red Sox released Monday, but top prospect Roman Anthony has since been added to the roster and will start in right. The domino effect of Anthony's arrival is Rafaela shifting back to his familiar center field spot and Kristian Campbell moving from center field to second base.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Rafaela is such a good athlete that he is a plus defensive center fielder who can also hold his own at shortstop and second base. He stole 39 bases in 136 games across Double-A, Triple-A and the majors and used his elite bat speed to launch 22 home runs in his age-22 season, despite a 5-foot-9 frame. His .319/.373/.579 slash line with a 20.2 K% and 5.9 BB% over his final 82 games in the minors last season earned him his first call to the majors. From a raw tools standpoint, he's a clear big leaguer. However, his hit tool needs refinement. He had a 38.8 Chase% and a 72.1 Contact%, leading to a 31.5 K% and 4.5 BB% in the majors. Working the count will never be Rafaela's strength, but he could eventually follow a path similar to Tim Anderson or Michael Harris, where he's not walking much but is doing enough damage and making enough contact to still be an above-average hitter. It's not clear how quickly that part of his game will advance from here, but his defensive chops will make him a priority addition to the big-league lineup once Boston thinks his bat is ready.
Rafaela put up impressive offensive numbers in 2022 that oversold his realistic MLB upside, but his center field defense is so good that he should have no problem carving out a big-league career. He doesn't hit the ball very hard and is prone to chasing, but Rafaela still managed a .301/.342/.540 slash line despite an ugly 4.8 BB%. Thankfully, he has plus speed to go with his plus-plus defense, so the 28-for-35 success rate on the bases could translate as he continues to climb. If he can just hit .230 or .240, Rafaela could be allowed to play every day in center field while hitting at the bottom of the order and chipping in 10-to-20 home runs with 20-plus steals. He is on the 40-man roster but may not debut until 2024.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Position shift on tap?
OFBoston Red Sox
May 21, 2025
Christopher Smith of MassLive.com posits that the Red Sox could shift Rafaela from center field to shortstop to make space in the outfield for top prospect Roman Anthony.
ANALYSIS
Rafaela is sitting at a .646 OPS in 165 plate appearances this season, but the 24-year-old has been better at the plate in May with a .281/.305/.421 slash line with a triple and three RBI across 61 plate appearances. Considering how well Anthony has been playing in Triple-A Worcester, Smith believes the Red Sox could make room for Anthony in left field by moving Rafaela to shortstop in place of Trevor Story while shifting Jarren Duran to center field. A promotion to the majors doesn't appear to be in the cards just yet for Anthony, with manager Alex Cora saying Wednesday that the team "hasn't made that decision."
