Blaze Alexander

26-Year-Old ShortstopSS
Arizona Diamondbacks
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Alexander made the Diamondbacks' Opening Day roster last season and played his way into regular looks in April, finishing the month with a .941 OPS and three home runs. He then slashed only .210/.272/.229 with a 29.6 percent strikeout rate the rest of the way and spent most of the second half back in the minors. Alexander put up an .819 OPS versus lefties but just a .538 OPS against right-handers, and much of his contact came on the ground with a 51.7 percent ground ball rate. The Diamondbacks are set at the three infield positions Alexander plays, and none of them need a short-side platoon partner, so it might take an injury or two for the 25-year-old to see regular playing time with the big club. Alexander is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Tigers.
Analysis
The right-handed-hitting Alexander started in seven consecutive games from July 13 through last Wednesday, but he'll likely be relegated to a short-side platoon role moving forward. He'll hit the bench Monday for the third time in the last four games, with his lone start during that stretch coming Saturday against Pirates southpaw Andrew Heaney.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
It's been a slow walk through the minors for Alexander, a 2018 11th-round draft pick that parlayed a strong 2022 season at Double-A Amarillo into a spot on the 40-man roster and shot at Triple-A Reno in 2023. He started strong but fractured a thumb in April that sidelined him for two months. The 24-year-old infielder finished with an .865 OPS and .281 average, fueled by a .398 BABIP. The power added in 2022 fell off, which may be attributed to the injury. The pop complemented his flashy fielding and arm (his best tool). As a shortstop by trade, Alexander sits behind Jordan Lawlar and Geraldo Perdomo on the major-league roster. As such, the organization introduced him to second and third base, but the same obstacles exist at those positions. Alexander may best be suited as a utility backup infielder.
The Diamondbacks elected to move Alexander up to the Double-A level to start 2022 even as he struggled mightily at High-A in 2021. He rewarded them with a big bounce-back campaign, collecting a .927 OPS with 17 home runs and 10 stolen bases before adding another couple dingers in a late-season Triple-A audition. Alexander was then added to the 40-man roster over the winter, putting him on the doorstep of the majors. The 23-year-old would be an option at shortstop for the D-backs should Nick Ahmed deal with more injuries, although Alexander might ultimately profile better as a utility player.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Role for 2025 unclear
SSArizona Diamondbacks
October 29, 2024
Alexander doesn't have a clear place on Arizona's big-league roster to begin 2025, according to Jack Sommers of SI.com.
Analysis
The 25-year-old appeared in 61 games as a rookie in 2024 and had a .247/.321/.343 slash line with three homers and three stolen bases. Alexander spent the final five-plus weeks of the regular season in the minors, and there isn't a clear path to playing time based on the current roster construction. The likely re-emergence of top prospect Jordan Lawlar, who missed most of the season due to injuries, provides an additional hurdle for Alexander's path to consistent playing time.
