2026 Tournament PreviewTom Izzo is leading the Spartans to the Big Dance for the 27th season in a row, the longest active streak in the nation. This year's team is defined by defense, which ranks eighth in the nation in KenPom's efficiency mark and No. 1 overall in defensive rebounding rate. The standout player is Jeremy Fears, who leads the team in scoring at 15.1 ppg and tops the country in assists at 9.1 apg. Senior Jaxon Kohler, who has spent his entire career at MSU, has also enjoyed a breakout year with averages of 12.4 ppg and 9.2 rpg. The X-factor is Coen Carr (11.4 ppg), who can sometimes be inconsistent offensively, but always puts on a show as the most prolific dunker in college hoops. The Spartans did falter a bit at one point, losing three of four in a stretch spanning Jan. 30 - Feb. 13, but finished the regular season on a 5-1 run. They've been tested all year with a tough schedule, and came out with the sixth-best Wins Above Bubble (WAB) ranking, boosted by a resume including eight Quad 1 wins. Another Elite Eight run, and possibly beyond, is undoubtedly in the realm of possibility.
